Among older adults, substance use disorder, particularly of alcohol and prescription drugs, are the fastest-growing health problems facing the United States. Projections indicate that since 2001 the misuse of prescription drugs have increased by 100 percent among older adults. The primary reason for the increase in substance use among baby boomers is later in life transitions.
Statistics show that a growing number of older adults are struggling to cope with late life changes, such as loss of a spouse, retirement, chronic illness, and financial hardship.
To curb the increase of substance use, older adults must be equipped with strategies to manage stressors associated with late life transitions, healthcare professionals must be able to identify the warning signs of substance use disorders in the older adult population and how to address these matters in a holistic and culturally sensitive manner.
